Watermelon Cultivation

Watermelon Cultivation is one type of fruit that is relatively easy to cultivate. Why is that? Because watermelon is very easy to grow on plains of land with an altitude of 0-1000 m above sea level. So for watermelon cultivation can be done in the lowlands and highlands.

Land Selection

To further maximize the cultivation of watermelons, you should choose a suitable soil for the growth of this watermelon plant. Good soil for growing watermelons should have a soil acidity of pH 5.5-6.5. But this plant can still grow below pH 5, so this plant can grow on peatlands.

The soil chosen for planting must be sufficiently loose and rich in organic matter. If we can determine the land to be planted, then the ground is processed. Before planting crops, we must clear the land to be cultivated, and then the land is plowed or hoed.

After hoeing gently, the next step is to make beds with a length of 12-15 m, a width of 1.5-2 m or about 3-4 m. after the bed is ready, then make a planting hole with a size of 40 x 40 x 30 cm. the spacing in rows is about 1.2-1.5 m. After that, the planting hole was given essential fertilizer consisting of 4 kg of manure, 28 grams of DS fertilizer, 22 grams of ZK fertilizer, and 15 grams of ZA fertilizer.

Nursery Way

Watermelon planting is done using seeds (seeds). Before becoming seeds that are ready to be planted, the seeds are first sown in plastic pots or polybags with sterile soil and manure media.

The first method of seeding is stretching the watermelon seeds to facilitate the growth process. The next step is soaking the watermelon seeds in 1 liter of water with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of the hormone (Atronic, Menedael, Abitonic), one tablespoon of ferries fungicide (anti-fungal medicine), 0,5 teaspoons bactericide press. After soaking for 10-30 minutes, remove and drain until the water no longer flows. The seeds are ready to be germinated.

Nursery bags are placed in a row to be exposed to the sun. Fertilization is done through the leaves so that it overgrows and fertilizer is mixed with medicine. Do fertilization three times.

After the seedlings have two leaves or are four weeks old, the seedlings are ready to be planted in open fields or gardens with a spacing of 1 m between seedlings.

How to Plant

Determination of cropping patterns in watermelon plants is done with a monoculture pattern. They are planting holes for watermelon seeds in the field after the nursery is 14 days old and two leaves have grown.

While waiting for the seeds to be large enough, make holes in the land with a depth of 8-10 cm. the preparation of the hole is carried out one week before the seeds are transferred to the ground.

It is 20-30 cm from the edge of the bed with a distance between holes of about 80-100 cm or depending on the thickness or thickness of the bed. After the perforation is done, the land is flooded with water around the height of the bed and left until the water seeps in.

Before planting the stem seeds, do the soaking first so that it is easy to release the polybag used. Then, the immunization step is done by soaking for 5-10 minutes and accompanied by a mixture of drug solutions.

Maintenance process

In the process of plant maintenance, several stages of care are generally given, including the operation of watering, weeding, hoarding, thinning and replanting, and finally, fertilizing.

Watering plants that have just been planted in open land or gardens is essential. The water must be free from overflowing to inundate the surface of the beds if we water through the channels of the beds.

Weeding on watermelon plants must be careful because we do not let the primary and secondary stems be cut or damaged. This weeding process can be done between 3-4 times during the planting period.

After a few days of planting, piling is done. Pembubunan is the process of piling up the soil so that the roots absorb food optimally. The preplanning process is sorting out young shoots to be discarded, which are not helpful and will inhibit the growth of watermelon plants.

Thinning and embroidery on watermelon plants are done after 3-5 days. If the plants are late in growth and cause death, immediately replace the plants with new seeds. And do thin by leaving only 2-3 plants.

We have to give P and K fertilizers and 1/3 part of N fertilizer for essential fertilizers. A mixture of P and K fertilizers is provided in the planting hole (5-8 cm deep) as far as 5-8 cm from the seeds. If using DS and ZK fertilizers, each hole is only given 28 grams of DS fertilizer and 22 grams of ZK fertilizer.

We have to apply N fertilizer three times. For example, if the N fertilizer given is ZA fertilizer (45 grams/plant), use 15 grams of fertilizer/plant.

The first application of fertilizer is given when the plants are planted. Then, the second application of fertilizer is given to the plants that are 1 m high. In contrast, the third fertilizer is given after the plants have fruited the size of a chicken egg.

Fertilization

Farmers in Japan usually only keep one fruit on each branch. So, from each tree will only get 3-4 fruit. Fertilization is arranged in the axil of the same leaf, approximately 1.5 m from the planting hole.

If the plant has released fruit, immediately give it dry straw, this jerima base is to avoid splashing rainwater, because rainwater will cause rotting of the fruit if it is directly exposed to the fruit body. For a good size each hectare can produce as much as 8-10 tons of fruit.
